"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup for September 2009

Welcome to "The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup report for the month of September. Finally, after a brutally hot summer, temperatures are falling and there is a hint of Fall in the air. It seemed like the long, hot days of summer would never end, but there is relief on the way, even as I write this report.

The Net aired all five Wednesdays of the month with moderate participation. A total of 13 different stations checked in at least once or more during the month. Unfortunately, only one Net member made the "PA (Perfect Attendance) LIST" this month. As Host for the Net, I salute and commend K7DMF (Dave in Vail) for his outstanding participation and support of the Net. Dave is truly a dedicated and committed Net member and is always "on frequency" each and every week of the Net. THANK YOU, Dave. I think I owe you a piece of Oreo Cookie pie!

During the month of September, the number of Announcements concerning upcoming hamfests and '60s music concerts increased as we began our foray into the Fall season. These types of events will continue to increase as we journey deeper into the Fall and Winter seasons.

On the final Net of the month, there was some interesting discussion on 1960s music and the city of Memphis, Tennessee. This well-known city on the Mississippi River has a strong connection to rock and roll music, including many great artists popular in the 1960s. Here are some noteworthy facts to remember about Memphis and rock and roll.

* Memphis is the home of the legendary Sun Records label founded in 1952 by Sam Phillips. The label is known for giving notable musicians such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison,    Buddy McNeil and Johnny Cash their first recording contracts and helping to launch their careers

* It was Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips that made history by being the first DJ to play an Elvis Presley record on the air ("Thats Alright Mama") on July 8, 1954

* Memphis is where the "Memphis Soul Sound" of music developed. The music featured melodic unison horn lines, organ, bass, and a driving beat on the drums

* Besides being the home of Sun Records, Memphis was where the legendary Stax Records developed, one of the largest African-American-owned businesses in the United States during the 1960s. Stax launched the careers and recorded hits for the likes of Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Booker T. and The MGs, The Mar-Keys, Sam and Dave, and many more

* Memphis is also the home of "The King of Rock and Roll", Mr. Elvis Presley. It was here that Presley died at his Graceland Mansion on August 16, 1977

As always, there were a lot of great trivia questions covering both '60s pop-rock music and TV shows posed during the Nets. The three featured segments of the Net each week, "This Week In 1960s Rock and Roll History", "#1 Hits For The Week Of.....", and "This Week In 1960s Television History", continued to be an integral part of the Net.
