"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup for November
2009
Welcome to "The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup report for the month of November.
The weather this month has definitely become more "Fall-like" and representative of our famed Arizona "Chamber of
Commerce weather" that draws "Winter Visitiors" from many parts of the U.S. and western Canada. I hope all of our
Net members had a very Happy Thanksgiving with family and friends during this special time of the year. The Net
membership would also like to take this opportunity to wish our long-time member N7PHX (Jim in Tempe) a speedy and
successful recovery following a week in the hospital.
The Net was conducted on each of the four Wednesdays of the month with moderate participation. A
total of 11 different stations checked in at least once or more during the month. K7SLS (Shel in Phoenix) was only
able to briefly check in once this month as a result of his work that requires telephonic conference calls during
the time of the Net. KE7FQL (John in Phoenix) has been unable to check into the Net for many weeks now since his
HOA required that he take down his amateur radio antennas. The Net hopes Shels schedule eases so that he can check
in and that John will be able to come to some resolution on his antenna problem so that he, too may resume checking
into the Net.
During November, three Net members made the "PA (Perfect Attendance) LIST". I would like to
recognize the following stations for participating in all four Nets throughout the month.
KB4VYM(Clarke in Tucson)
KE7GRV (Terry in Tempe)
K7DMF (Dave in Vail)
K7DMF (Dave in Vail) brought to everyones attention a new specialty liquor that is named after the 1965 hit song,
"Love Potion Number Nine" by The Searchers. According to a Marin County, California wine-liquor expert, "Love
Potion #9 is golden amber in color and has a subtle tropical smell and tastes like your favorite fruit, chocolate
and nut all rolled up into one. It can be used as a cocktail additive, or it's infinitely mixable in any cocktail
using vodka, rum or tequila". The 60-proof distilled spirit specialty is currently being distributed by CSMC
Spirits on the east coast, and just became available on the west coast. The hit record charted all the way to #3 in
late 1964 and spent a total of eleven weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. This was the biggest hit for the
quartet from Liverpool, England that was part of the famous British Invasion. Previously an R&B group from
Washington D.C., The Clovers, had a pop hit with "Love Potion No. 9" in November 1959 that charted to #23.
I was very pleased to let the membership know that I had finally just solved the mystery of,
"Who Were The Mustangs?", an instrumental rock band from the 1960s. I had previously written an article on the "CQ
Hams Still Groovin' In The 60s" sub-domain in the "DID YOU KNOW" column seeking information from anyone who might
know or have any information on the band. I did not receive one response, however, a clue from the popular YouTube
website led me to an original member of the band and "the rest is all history" as the saying goes. Ultimately, I
had the priviledge of writing the first-ever biography of this popular Jersey Shore instrumental band. The Mustangs
biography should be appearing in the "DID YOU KNOW" column very soon. You won't want to miss reading the
interesting, intriguing, complex and convoluted story of this teenage band who did not even know how popular their
instrumental single, "The Dartell Stomp" from 1964 had become until my contact with one of the founding band
members in November.
As always, there were a lot of great trivia questions covering both '60s pop-rock music and TV shows posed during
the Nets. The three featured segments of the Net each week, "This Week In 1960s Rock and Roll History", "#1 Hits
For The Week Of.....", and "This Week In 1960s Television History", continued to be an integral part of the
Net.
Please don't forget that your comments, suggestions and questions for the website, "CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The
60s", are always welcome! And how about inviting a ham friend that has 222 Mhz. equipment to join us on Wednesday
evenings for the Net? As the saying goes, "the more, the merrier!"
If you live in southcentral Arizona, are visiting, or just passing through, please join us on
Wednesday nights at 7:30 pm for the '60s Nostalgia Net on the 224.500 Repeater (N7EOJ) located at 9,100' above
Tucson in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Everyone "into the '60s" is welcome!
