CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The 60's

"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup

December 2009

As I write the December 2009 "1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows

Net" Roundup report, I am reminded that this is the final report on the Net for this year. It is also hard to believe that the Net has been filling the airwaves on the 220 Mhz. band every Wednesday evening for a year and a half now. As I often say, "where does the time go?"

Just two days before Christmas, the '60s Nostalgia Net suddenly and unexpectedly lost one of it's members, KC7Y (Bob in Mesa). Bob enjoyed talking about 1960s music and television trivia on the Net and certainly was a '60s music afficionado. He was a licensed ham for many years, holding an Extra Class license. In the early 1980s, Bob was one of the initial group of hams in Arizona to become involved in packet radio in which he operated a BBS system. I personally knew Bob from the 1970s-1980s as we were both active in the Arizona Wing of Civil Air Patrol. He was a long time supporter of the Maricopa County Emergency Communications Group, continually volunteering his time in support of public service events and activities. In like manner, Bob was also involved in the Maricopa County Sheriff's Communications and Jeep Posses, providing law enforcement related communications in a supplementary role. Bob additionally volunteered his time for Special Olympics. He is survived by two daughters and two grandchildren and was a 30 year employee of Motorola/General Dynamics. "Rest in peace, Bob, and thank you for being a part of the ham radio fraternity and The 1960s Nostalgia Net. You will be missed!"

From all reports, our Net members had a Merry Christmas and seem to be off to a good start in the new year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the Net membership a very Healthy and Happy New Year and lets hope 2010 is a much better year than 2009.

The Net was conducted each of the five weeks of the month with moderate participation. A total of 13 stations checked in at least once or more during the month. It was great to have KE7FQL (John in north Phoenix) rejoin the Net after having been absent for about four months. John was able to find a workable solution in getting around HOA antenna restrictions in his housing complex in order to participate in the Net. "Thanks, John for your perseverance and creativity in being able to stay on the air and continue being a part of the Net. We are all pleased to have you and Betty back as part of our '60s group!"

Perhaps due to the holidays, there was only one station with Perfect Attendance during the month. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate K7DMF (Dave in Vail) for being on the Net each and every week during December. Needless to say, Dave and his wife Patty are truly regular participants on the Net, actively engaged in conversation and discussion, and having a high degree of accuracy in answering both music and television trivia questions. "Thanks, Dave and Patty for your loyalty and outstanding participation as members of The '60s Net. It is greatly appreciated!!!"

As always, there were a lot of interesting and challenging trivia questions covering both 1960s pop-rock music and TV shows. The three featured segments of the Net, "This Week In 1960s Rock and Roll History", "#1 Hits For The Week Of.....", and "This Week In 1960s Television History" continued to be an integral part of the Net each week.

I would like to encourage all our '60s Net participants to actively recruit some new members as we begin the new year. As you know, the more check-ins there are, the more interesting and engaging the Net is on any given week. Having more members participate and use the band also helps sustain our efforts in retaining 220 for the amateur radio community.

On a final note, I would like to take this opportunity as we enter 2010 to thank each Net member for your participation during the past year. As I always say, "without you checking into the Net each week, there would be no Net". Thanks, again and I look forward to a great year of recounting and reliving with you the incredible music of the 1960s as well as the memorable television shows of that decade. "Help keep the '60s alive!"
