"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup for September 2008
"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" was held each week during the month of September with good participation. There were a lot of great
trivia questions covering both 60s rock music and TV shows. Some of the questions forced members to reach far back into the memory bank and dust
off some storage shelves to retrieve the correct answers. Boy, its heck to get old!
We also had some engaging discussion on various 60s music and television topics and had an interesting update from Terry,
KE7GRV, on Arizona's own DUANE EDDY , the most successful and influential instrumentalist in Rock and Roll history. Eddy, a Grammy Award-winning
guitarist and 1994 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, introduced the unique, "twangy" sound to rock and roll guitar, and popularizing the
electric rock guitar during the 1950s. Terry recently spoke with a high school classmate who is a personal friend of Eddy and reported that he
(Eddy) is doing well and currently living in North Carolina.
During September there were 11 different hams that checked into the Net with four making the "PA" (Perfect Attendance)
List. Those stations were: K7DMF (Dave) in Vail, N7PHX (Jim) in Tempe, KE7FQL (John) in Phoenix, and KE7GRV (Terry) in Tempe. Kudos to
these four Net members for their outstanding participation and support of the Nostalgia Net!
I would also like to recognize and thank KC0LL (David) of Tucson for allowing the Net to use his linked, wide-coverage 440 repeaters as a backup
should the 224.500 repeater go down for any reason. The repeaters, 449.975 located on Mt. Lemmon in Tucson and 449.875 situated atop Keystone
Peak near Green Valley, provide excellent coverage for a large portion of southcentral Arizona. Thank you, David for your support of the 1960s
Nostalgia Net! I would also like to thank N7EOJ (Bud) once again for allowing the Net to use the 224.500 repeater. Not only does this "machine"
provide solid and reliable communications for the Net, but also facilitates the use of the 220 band; as hams we must remain diligent in our use
of this VHF band lest it be reallocated for commercial use.
For the September Net Roundup, I would like to feature a ham I have known for the past 45+ years, WA9PYH (Jim) from South
Bend, Indiana. Though Jim can not check in to the 60s Net, he is a true 60s music afficionado and trivia expert. He is also a childhood friend
who introduced and peaked my interest in ham radio. This past August, Jim and his wife traveled to New York state to visit the hallowed grounds
of the greatest rock and roll concert ever held, WOODSTOCK (August 1969). The first night there, they attended "Hippiefest", a concert featuring
part or all of the following 60s bands: The Hollies, The Turtles, Cream, and Eric Burdon and The Animals. Jim reported that the groups played
many of their hit songs from the 1960s and sounded very good, much as they did "back in the day". Jim and his wife visited the Woodstock Museum
at Bethel Woods, the site of the actual Woodstock Concert. The museum features various displays, films, and memorabilia of events and things
taking place during the 1960s including the Viet Nam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Dr. martin Luther
King, top 40 music, 60s fashions, the Cold War, drugs and many more. There is also a hippie bus painted with flowers and beads hanging
inside that you can sit in to watch a short presentation on the Woodstock rock music festival.
Pictured below is a photo of Jim (l) and original Woodstock co-promoter Michael Lang (r). Also pictured is the metal plate
commemorating the Woodstock Music Festival and the names of all the bands who performed at this now world reknowned and history-making concert.
Woodstock would be the final great tribute to the music of the 1960s, ending an era of music that some say is unrivaled while ushering in a new
decade and new styles of music. There was only one Woodstock and for all 60s music lovers, this is a MUST-SEE place to visit. As Jim so aptly
stated, "being at Woodstock let me stand on sacred ground".

The Internet companion to the Net, "CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The 60s" continues to develope and expand with new
material being added each week. Recently added articles in the "DID YOU KNOW....." column included the biography of The Cowsills and an expose on
1960s Rock and Roll Genres. In the "Brain Teasers and Trivia" section, two 1960s Rock and Roll Genres Tests were added. If you haven't tested
your knowledge on 60s bands and the rock genre to which each belong, give it a try.... you might surprise yourself!
And please don't forget, too, that your suggestions, comments and questions for the website are always welcome!
Listed below are the music trivia questions for the month. Give them a try and see if you are a 'Novice', 'Technician',
'General' or 'Extra' when it comes to 60s pop-rock music.
If you live in southcentral Arizona, are visiting, or just passing through, please join us on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm on
the 224.500 repeater (N7EOJ) located at 9,100' above Tucson in the Santa Catalina Mountains for the Net. Everyone "into the 60s" is welcome!
