CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The 60's

"The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup

January 2010

In writing "The 1960s Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" Roundup report, it is hard to imagine that this is the first report of the new year and a new decade. There is a commonly held belief that the older one becomes, the faster time goes by- something that certainly appears to be true, in my opinion, thats for sure!

On behalf of The 1960s Nostalgia Net and it's members, I would like to express our condolences to K1ATV (Bil in Mesa), one of our original Net members. Late in January, Bil lost his 96 year-old mother for whom he had cared for many years.

Some other updates on Net members include KB8YYA (Dreux in Phoenix) who informed me that he had not been on the Net for quite some time due to a malfunctioning microprocessor in his Alinco 220 mobile rig. Dreux hopes to have the radio repaired soon and rejoin the Net. I also have had several e-mail notes from K7UNL (Bob in Scottsdale) who will very soon be purchasing a new Alinco mobile radio so that he can once again be part of The '60s Net. Bob has not had a 220 radio to use since his previous rig developed some major, unrepairable electronic problems and forced him off the Net for the better part of a year. N7PHX (Jim in Tempe) just had a newly constructed J-Pole antenna placed on his roof which is giving him a very strong signal out of the repeater. This is a real testimony for the effectiveness of the J-Pole, an easy and inexpensive antenna to build out of copper tubing. Jim would like to thank KE7GRV (Terry in Tempe) for building and installing the antenna at his home.

The Net was conducted each of the four weeks of the month with moderate participation. A total of 11 stations checked in at least once or more during the month. There were three stations with Perfect Attendance during the month. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate KB4VYM (Clarke in Tucson), KE7GRV (Terry in Tempe), and K7DMF (Dave in Vail) for being on the Net each and every week during January. Your loyalty and committment to being on the Net each week is to be commended!

As always, there were a lot of interesting and challenging trivia questions covering both 1960s pop-rock music and TV shows. The three featured segments of the Net, "This Week In 1960s Rock and Roll History", "#1 Hits For The Week Of.....", and "This Week In 1960s Television History" continued to be an integral part of the Net each week. Synchronicity was certainly at work once again on the Net involving KB4VYM (Clarke). One of the music trivia questions from Week #2 of the Net pertained to Ray Peterson's late 1960 hit song, "Corinna, Corinna" (#9 on the Billboard Chart). Clarke stated on the Net that he had never heard this high-charting song before. The following week, Clarke reported that the very next day after the question had been asked, he heard "Corinna, Corinna" on the sixties channel of Serius Satellite Radio. This is not the first time synchronicity has occurred for Clarke. Could this be how our youngest Net member is being caught up on all those memorable hits he missed hearing back in the 1960s? Hmmmnnn, I do wonder. At any rate, I'm glad you enjoyed, "Corinna, Corinna", Clarke.

I would like to encourage all our '60s Net participants to actively recruit some new members as we begin the new year. As you know, the more check-ins there are, the more interesting and engaging the Net is on any given week. Having more members participate and use the band also helps sustain our efforts in retaining 220 for the amateur radio community.

As I mentioned last month, I would like to take this opportunity as we begin 2010 to thank each Net member for your participation during the past year. As I always say, "without you checking into the Net each week, there would be no Net". Thanks, again and I look forward to a great year of recounting and reliving the incredible music of the 1960s as well as the memorable television shows of that decade. "Help keep the '60s alive!"
