"The 1960's Pop-Rock Music and Tv Shows Net" Roundup for July 2008

The "1960's Pop-Rock Music and TV Shows Net" was once again quite active during the month of July. The weak Monsoon did not produce any storms that kept us off the air, allowing the Net to be conducted each week per schedule. There were a total of 15 different hams that checked into the Net with one, K7DMF (Dave) in Vail having 'Perfect Attendance'. Way to go Dave!

This month I wanted to share some news from two of our regular Net members on personal experiences they have had with some of the great music talents of the 1960s and beyond. Bob (K7UNL), a now retired 60s music DJ and 30 year veteran of commercial radio, attended an ABC-Dunhill Record convention in Los Angeles in the late 60s and had the good fortune of meeting Tommy Roe and members of Three Dog Night. During his tenure at radio station WOLF in Syracuse, New York, Bob served as MC for several rock concerts. At one concert in particular, Bob clearly remembers introducing Jethro Tull, Rod Stewart, and Aerosmith, all major rock groups in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Before the formal introductions, Bob had some time to talk to the artists and later attended a party with members of the Jethro Tull group. Sometime off air, ask Bob about the party. I understand it was rather 'interesting'.

Another member of our weekly Net, Tom (AB7IC), had the chance of a lifetime when he met the legendary Paul McCartney on a flight from Tucson to New York in 1981. Tom shook hands with Sir Paul and thought he was a very pleasant person. McCartney did have and may still own a large ranch in Tucson, a favored place of his late wife, Linda. It was at the ranch where Linda McCartney passed away in April 1998 as a result of breast cancer.

The Internet companion to the Net, "CQ Hams Still Groovin' In The 60's" continues to expand and grow with fresh new material being added each week. Through the "DID YOU KNOW....." column, I hope to chronicle the stories of the artists and bands that often do not get the recognition and credit they deserve, all having their rightful place in 1960s rock and roll history. In additon, it is my goal to present material and information on 60s music and groups that you will probably not find anywhere else; I hope you enjoy this fresh, "out-of-the box" approach to the music and the bands who made it. And if you really want to see how much you know about 1960s music, check out the "Brainteasers and Tests" section of the website. You may surprise yourself and I guarantee will come away more informed than before you started. Please don't forget, too, that your suggestions, comments and questions for the website are always welcome!

Listed below are the music trivia questions for the month. Give them a try and see if you are a 'Novice', 'Technician', 'General' or 'Extra' when it comes to 60's pop-rock music.

If you live in southcentral Arizona or are visiting or just passing through, please join us on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm on the 224.500 repeater (N7EOJ) located at 9,100' above Tucson in the Santa Catalina Mountains for the Net. Everyone "into the 60s" is very welcome!
